The Science Behind the Bite
Step 1: The Saliva Setup
When a mosquito lands on your skin, it first coats the area with saliva that works like a mild anesthetic. This numbs the bite zone so you don’t feel the sting as it happens. That same saliva also acts as an anticoagulant, helping the mosquito drink more easily.
Unfortunately, it’s also what causes that infamous red, itchy bump—your body reacting to the foreign proteins in the mosquito’s spit.
Step 2: The Bite Mechanics
Next, the mosquito uses its serrated mandibles to saw into your skin, creating an entry point. Then it uses its long, flexible proboscis to search around for a blood vessel.
